Bloompocket’s Top 16 House Records EVER

Posted April 2nd, 2008 by Bloompocket
Whenever one compiles a list of the “top” anything unbounded controversy is almost certain to ensue. However, with this list, the last thing I’m looking to do is to inspire debate. I realize that there may be many “house purists” who will disapprove of my exclusion of many of the classics from the early days of house music. However, this is a list of favorites from the perspective of a jazz musician-turned-house head, which, as I will be the first to tell you, is an unusual perspective at this stage in music history.

Because I love these tracks so much and want to really give everyone a sense of the beauty and power of this music, I thought I’d include brief audio clips of each track so that even if you have zero familiarity with house music, you could still get a sense for what it is about this music that moves me so. (please forgive the poor sound quality on some of the clips)

These are nothing more than beautiful tracks that hit me on the level of feeling due to their powerful combinations of melody, harmony, groove, production, and positive dance floor impact, AND, I’d love to share them with you- so let the hate mail begin!!

(in no particular order)
  • Basement Jaxx - Red Alert (Miracles Keeps On Playin’ mix)

  • Rasmus Faber - Ever After

  • Ian Pooley feat Esthero - Balmes (a better life)

  • Nova Fronteira - Supernova

  • Grant Nelson - Free / Switch

  • Universal Love - Ritmo Rua (Brian Tappert Re-Edit)

  • Mundo Azul - Sereia

  • Nuyorican Soul - Runaway (Mouse T’s Jazz Funk Experience)

  • Knee Deep - Nassau

  • Bob Sinclar - The Ghetto

  • Afro Medusa - Pasilda (Knee Deep’s Club Mix)

  • Blaze - Found Love

  • Global Communication - The Way

  • Pound Boys - Que Pasa

  • Cricco Castelli - Life is Changing

  • Pepe Braddock - 18 Carats

With love from Marina Del Rey,

Doron

    A few comments:

“Red Alert”: I have always LOVED “Red Alert”, but I have to say that i do like the original best.
“Ever After”: I can’t believe that someone other than me has “Ever After” on their top list.. the clip included begins in EXACTLY the perfect spot.
I effing LOVE that track. Definitely a “dancing with my eyes closed and crashing into lots of people” track.
“Balmes” I love just about anything created by Ian Pooley. Very smooth…
“Universal Love”: Another lovely one that always makes me move.
“Mundo Azul” Not familiar with this one but LOVE IT!
“Runaway” I LOVE THIS EFFING TRACK!! I love that you included such a LONG sample of this one including the best part of the track:
THE XYLOPHONE SOLO!!! Amazing! This was my favorite track on one of my favorite old Terry Mullan mix tapes from the 90’s (”We love to fly and it shows”)
“Nassau” Another new one to me… LOVE IT. Very funky.
“The Ghetto” This track belongs on EVERYONE’s top 20… CLASSIC Bob Sinclair production. I remember when it first came out, we would hear it
at a party 3 times in one night and I would dance just as hard the 3rd time as I did the 1st.) Those KEYS!!!
“Pasilda” YES! SUPER FUN dance track!!! Latin house make me MOVE MY HIPS!!!
“Found Love” Those Blaze guys really get it. I’ve always loved this one… both funky AND emotional.
“The Way” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DEFINITELY another eyes-closed one…
“Que pasa” another new one to me. I really dig it.
“Life is Changing” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If this one isn’t on a person’s list, you and I can’t be friends with them.

Doron, THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this list. It REALLY made my day. Now I have a favor to ask… since I am only a house dancer and not
a DJ, I only own these tracks as parts of various mix cd’s… any chance YOU might mix all 16 of these together and share it??? I promise you it would get LOTS of play and bring me MUCH joy. I’d seriously owe ya one…
